Snowflake challenge day 2!
Jan. 3rd, 2019 06:30 pmSnowflake challenge again! :)
Day 2
Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
So I always find this the hardest challenge just because I overthink it lol - I'd like for my recs to fit some kind of neat, sensible theme... but what? Reccing fic I've recently finished almost feels too easy (and some of them I've probably already just recced elsewhere), but if I read it a while ago how can I be sure I'll feel the same way about it now? Reccing for small fandoms shines greater light on them and the works, but also can feel self-indulgent, not to mention that in many small fandoms you could readily assume any fans have already read all that's available. Should I rec something other than fic? But I don't seek out a lot of art and I certainly don't seek out fanvids lately. And beyond that, I just don't know where to begin - I don't keep bookmarks of useful wiki articles or the like.
BUT, in the end I'm just gonna keep it simple and rec a few things I've read recently. n.n;;
First of all, I can rec a whole bunch all in one because
aroworlds recently put together a really useful list of aromantic and aro-spectrum writers of fan and original fiction! I definitely recommend you check it out if you're interested in that!
True North by Emungere (Metal Gear Solid, Snake/Otacon)
So I literally just finished this a few minutes ago! It's a very old fic - it was the earliest one for the pairing above a certain level of kudos and AO3 claims it was published in 2001! (And yet the writer is still doing fic in 2018!! So cool!!) Which is kind of what I was going for because my girlfriend and I are actually playing through MGS for the first time (for me, not her), and it's a pretty interesting experience given that in the 00s I discovered some Snake/Otacon fanart on deviantart and ended up reading a bunch of fic for them despite having never played the game? Anyway this is just a really nice, succinct but impactful fic that captures the character dynamic really well and manages to hit just the right emotions!
Zen Office by Meguri_Aite (Aggretsuko, Gori/Retsuko)
This is a super cute fic that really captures the cuteness that would ensue from a Gori/Retsuko couple, told from the perspective of a number of different characters, all perfectly depicted! I'm such a sucker for outsider POV because it really lets you show different facets of a couple by seeing it through different filters, and this one really shows well how the characters can see the same thing completely differently!
https://crookedmedia.slack.com by gdgdbaby and radialarch (Crooked Media RPF, Jon Favreau/Jon Lovett/Tommy Vietor)
Another really great (partially) outsider POV work, which also happens to be a great mixed media internet-based piece! There's so much to this one, not just in terms of the pairing itself but also delving into the behind the scenes work that goes into the newsletter and the like. And when it does come to the pairing, even though we only see the story in bits of pieces it's easy to put together what's going on, and pretty satisfying to see the eventual pay-off!
I think I'll leave it here, so I'll see you all again tomorrow - or tonight, depending on how easy the prompt is. n.n;;
