Date: 2018-12-15 11:38 am (UTC)that are probably answered in canon but which I've now forgotten* How recently did Sin reappear before Tidus appeared in Spira, and how long does it take to become a summoner? It seems like it should be a really lengthy process, right? But obviously if Sin reappears and then a few years pass before anyone can deal with it, that's not good. So do people learn summoning before Sin has ever shown up, in a 'we study this so that we may never need use it' kind of way? Obviously Sin comes back pretty regularly, but it's also made clear IIRC that every time Sin dies people really hold out hope that it'll never come back. The fact that Yuna (probably?) decided to become a summoner before that happened says something really interesting about her character. (And I have a mental record of her saying "Sin always comes back," really flatly, so yeah, she probably does have a surprisingly pessimistic side.) On the other hand, there must be some reason why people can't just become a summoner and then get all the aeons and then just hang around Zanarkand until the moment Sin comes back, lol.
* Did Baralai ever consider becoming a summoner? Like, not to force him into the role just because he's a priest and has a white magey aesthetic (but I repeat myself I guess), but he's clearly around the right age (presuming that summoners are people who will come of age around the time Sin should come back, thus able to dedicate themselves full time to becoming a summoner) and it would suit his personality. I mean, I assume the answer is that he was always more interested in the political side and wanted to be a positive, tolerant, moderating influence on Bevelle that way. Plus the whole deal with Crimson Squad, so actually maybe it was that on-the-ground fighting he preferred. But man now I kinda want a fic where either a) Baralai was a summoner or b) he became one of Yuna's guardians.
...ahhh and now I really want to replay FFX and then also FFX-2. Honestly fr a long time I had really mixed feelings about FFX-2 but now I just kinda wanna remind myself of the story - I get the sense I'll feel differently about it now. And like, Gippal/Baralai is one of my all time top OTPs, so.
